Retiring my old Design Notebook. She has been with me since late 2022 and housed every random sketch, idea, and plan I've had.

The design notebook plays such an important role because it is NOT official. The sketches aren't meant to be pretty, measurements dont have to be properly labeled, and ideas dont have to be good. It's a crash pad to keep the momentum going.

Shout out to @moleskine for being my go to Notebook since I started Design school in 2018!!!

Took us about 8 months, but the EPU lives! You might remember from the animation I posted, but this is a truly unique SELS product. 450 phones can be charged per day, free satellite internet via @starlinksofficial, and two 120V AC outlets for mini fridges or anything else.

The EPU is a civilian facing disaster relief product. Easily deployable and secure, it helps people caught in natural disasters keep their devices charged and keep them connected to the internet to contact loved ones and follow instructions from the authorities. It has additional outlets for larger amenities like mini fridges for insulin, television for announcements, charging power tools, or anything else that may be needed.

These three are going to New York for their emergency management efforts. Huge shout out to Meyers Emergancy Managment (MEM) for helping us connect with New York.

"Standing Lamp" - OttesonDesign

The "Standing Lamp" is a 5.5-foot tall lamp designed to mirror the design language of the Press Sphere Pendant but with my own twist! It is part of a 3 part collection I am submitting to this design challenge. It features a variety of innovative design qualities while upholding the luxurious and curious nature of Tom Dixon's lighting design.
The main body is folded in 0.102" aluminum that is anodized in deep black to highlight the colorful nature of the multi-optic dielectric glass block. With consistent themes of rounded rectangles, the "Standing Lamp" utilizes internal LED tube lights that beam the light through the wavy glass. The internal structure consists of an aluminum span that doubles as the primary connection between the legs that hold the glass cube in place and as the holding mechanism for the electronics and LED tube. It also acts as an internal shade, ensuring that almost all of the light is projected upward and downward. The "Standing Lamp" has two of these spans, considering there is about 40 lbs of glass up there.
The "Standing Lamp" acts as a gorgeous conversion piece that shows off a truly unique appearance. It is designed to be easily manufactured using familiar and inexpensive techniques.

"Hanging Lamp" - OttesonDesign

The "Hanging Lamp" is a medium-sized ceiling light that takes its inspiration from the Press Sphere Pendant and the BEat LED Fat Pendant light. I designed this lamp to be the final part in a 3 part collection I am submitting for the Tom Dixon ReImagine Design Competition. I was quite inspired by some interviews that I watched about Tom and the way that he looks at the design from a shapes perspective and then fits the electronics in afterward. That was the direction I took with all 3 of the designs I am submitting. One of the fruits that was produced from that process is the straightforward construction of all these lamps. I went in the opposite direction of the old adage of "form follows function" and found success.
The "Hanging Lamp" has offset power cords, offering it a unique footprint on the ceiling. They hold up a solid block of multi-optic dielectric glass by connecting directly to the two internal aluminum spans. These spans not only link to the folded and anodized aluminum covering but they house the electronics and the LED tube light that powers the design. This design is unique among the three I am submitting because it has a covering over the top of the light. This re-reflects the light back into the glass and down on the area it is positioned over. Because of it's size, it can illuminate a small area by itself but can also easily be grouped with more "Hanging Lamps" to form a visual bar of light illuminating large dining tables or rooms.
As with all of the lamps in this collection, the "Hanging Lamp" is designed to be easily manufactured, assembled, and maintained while presenting as a contemporary high-design piece that seamlessly fits into the Tom Dixon Lighting Catalog.
